A misleading word. Reeks of disappointment. Disillusion. Deflation. When applied out of guilt.
It implies there is no win-win.
And there is always a win-win. Often found in the most unexpected of discussions.
Not with your heart. Your desires. Or with those of others.
You never know what you’re depriving them of.
Choose the win-win.
It’s like this guy I once knew. You may know him too.
At 19 his girlfriend fell pregnant. It wasn’t planned. So they had to get married. Because it was the right thing to do. According to their parents. So they were happy. But he wasn’t. But his happiness wasn’t important. Compromise.
They then had baby number two. So they had to move to a bigger house. He decided to stay at the job he hated because it paid really well. Gotta have money to pay the bills, right? My happiness can wait. My family needs me. Compromise.
The job that paid well? It served its purpose. He could spend many hours ‘working on projects’ with a colleague. She set his soul on fire. Talking to her made him feel like a man. Looking into her eyes affirmed that anything is possible. But he couldn’t leave his family. They wouldn’t survive without him. Compromise.
His marriage continued and they had one more child. They were now in their 40’s. It was time to think about the future. But he couldn’t see it.
All his compromising had run out of fuel. He was stretched too thin until finally he snapped.
This sweet, selfless man that had given up so much decided to make some tough decisions. He left his family. To find whatever it was that would make him feel valued. Conscious. And worthy.
Did his family survive? Sure did. Yes there were tears of confusion and pain. But they eventually found a way to make it work.
Could he have avoided the angst by simply asking for what he wanted at the very beginning? Absolutely.
But he didn’t even try. He couldn’t see it. He didn’t think win-win was even an option.
Compromise, folks. Don’t do it.
